Got back from NY, NY last night. It was a whirwind weekend filled with shopping, mad dashes for pizza and lots of Broadway.
Friday I met Jenny at our friend Brian's apartment, where we were staying. We made an immediate journey to H&M. Then we ate at Burger Heaven, and I wondered if it was related to a Hamburger Heaven where Dad took me a long time ago. Memorable burgers on both accounts.
That night we went to see "Alter Boyz," a quite funny and close to being sacriligious musical featuring five "evangelical Catholics" in a singing group like the Backstreet Boys. With songs like "Jesus Called Me On My Cell Phone" you can't go wrong.
Ryan's friend Carlos (second from left) is the dance captain, and we met up with him and one of the stars of the show, Danny. Carlos is the best. He grew up in part in Clearwater and has a pug named Buster so we automatically get along. We went to a trendy little lounge where Ryan met us.
On Saturday Jenny and I met Ryan for brunch at a place near his apartment
called good. And good it was. Then Jenny and I spent the day shopping in SoHo. We bought cupcakes from Magnolia Bakery ... yum. The best find was at a street fair, where we met a handbag designer named Wendy Luker who made the best handbags and yoga mats out of vintage fabric. Plus she uses a womens cooperative to sew them. I bought two that are featured on her website: Wendy Loo Hanbags
That night we ran to see "Mamma Mia" with hot slices of pizza in our hands. What a New York moment. Ryan was the best as always and we took some goofy pictures on the stage.
After the show he took us to a party with lots of his friends in a sassy Chelsea loft. There were so many Broadway people there I wondered if someone would bust out playing on the grand piano in the middle of the room. Lo and behold, the host did, singing an original composition to his partner to the tune of "You Made Me Love Me." Now that just doesn't happen every day. Then everyone sang Happy Birthday in ridiculously perfect keys.
When I sang, Ryan said I was killing him softly.
Sunday morning we woke up and booked it back to Times Square, where we watched "Broadway on Broadway," a huge free concert where many of the Broadway musicals feature their songs. It's sort of a preview of the opening season. I elbowed people to get a good camcorder view of Mamma Mia. Also really enjoyed the songs from "All Shook Up," "Color Purple" and of course "Rent." (Strange thing with that -- Frenchy, aka, American Idol castoff, is in the show).
At the end huge explosions of confetti are blasted throughout Times Square. Pretty cool.
At the time of writing, there are photos of the event, including several of Ryan at:

The finale of the weekend was a trip to MoMA, which I have been wanting to make since it opened late last year. It was well worth the wait. The works in there are astonishing. I never cease to be giddy when I see Andy Warhol's soup cans and Marilyn.
So that's my story. Now I have to write a paper for class, which is much less appealing than thinking about fun times in NYC. I'm going to post some more photos in a related album ...
